Yemen: Arrest of an Internet press writer and shooting another

Cairo, May 12, 2009

The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information expressed today that it is deeply disturbed by the continuity of practices hostile to press freedom in Yemen, which resulted in the arrest of the journalist and internet activist "Yahya Bamahfouz", manager of the web site "Hadhramawt boards", moreover, some security men opened fire on journalist, "Saleh Khamis bin Mehanna" in the same city.

A force of the Criminal Investigation arrested the journalist Yahya Bamahfouz this morning from his house in the city of Makla in Hadhramawt province, and seized his computer and some personal electronic devices without giving reasons, before they took him to an unknown location.

Furthermore , journalist 'Saleh Khamis bin Mehanna' was shot when some of the military forces were chasing him in the same city "Hadramawt", the journalist in turn shot them, which made them stop chasing him and seize his motorcycle. It is worth mentioning that this is the second time in which the journalist "Saleh Bin Mihanna" gets attacked and prosecuted by the security services in less than a year, since the police force stormed his house at the end of June 2008, and terrorized his family with complete impunity of such violation.

The Arabic Network for Human Rights, which strongly condemns these attacks, expresses that it deeply disturbed by the escalation of attacks and assaults on Yemeni journalists and journalism, which puts the freedom and the lives of journalists in danger, under government violations which cannot be deterred even by law.
